Hong Kong will start its terrestrial digital TV services from 19:00PM 31 December 2007. The two local TV broadcasting operators TVB and ATV will simultaneously provide coverage using China standard compliant signals. 6 free channels will be available to Hong Kong residents, 4 of them are standard-definition TV (SDTV) programs and the rest 2 are high-definition TV (HDTV) programs.
Hong Kong has a population of 8 million. There are, on average, 2 TV sets in each home among the 3 million families. According to TVB, the market will require about 80 thousands all-in-one digital HDTV sets in the 1st year after the service is lunching. 95% of the homes will be transferred to digital TV sets in 5 years time.
