Narrow-band PLC refers to PLC with carrier frequency below 500kHz.  Regulations of different countries on narrow-band PLC frequency band are slightly different: 9-148.5kHz in Europe(CENELEC band), 3-500kHz in China,  FCC band 10-490kHz. Narrow-band PLC has come to its 2nd generation featured advanced narrow-band OFDM technology, instead of simple BFSK/BPSK modulation of the 1st generation.

PLC uses existing lines of electricity power distribution network to transmit carrier signals which carry data information, no need to lay new wires, thus easy to implement and low in cost. Typical applications of PLC incude,

  • Automatic Meter Reading and Management (AMR/AMM) for smart grid
  • PLC over medium-voltage power distribution network for distribution automation application  
  • PLC home area networking (PLC-HAN) for smart appliances and controls 
  • Data communications over DC wires
  • Other data communication applictions over low- or medium-voltage power lines, no need to re-lay wires
